Cooking on campfires
Cooking on a campfire allows you to create some delicious dishes outside of your home kitchen and with a unique taste too.
Here are some simple recipes:
Dampers
Dampers are made from a simple bread dough which can be wound around a stick and cooked over the camp fire:
- 1 cup or 8oz self-raising flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- Pinch of salt
- Rub the butter and flour together until it is crumbly.
- Mix the salt, sugar and milk, a little at a time, until it creates a dough.
- Divide into 8 – 10 balls then roll into long sausages.
- Wind each piece around a clean, dry stick then hold in the flames for between 7 – 10 minutes.
- Cover in butter, jam or whatever takes your fancy.
Bacon & Eggs In A Paper Bag
You’ll need to place these on a grill over your fire, out of reach of the flames. Oil the bottom & sides of the bag first, before lining it with overlapping strips of bacon to create a ‘bowl’. Crack one or two eggs into the bowl. Allow one bag per person and cook for 7 – 10 minutes over hot coals.
